Vermont College
In 1911, Edward Everett, known as the glass and bottle magnate of the
American Industrial Revolution, commissioned architect George Totten and
30 stonemasons from Italy to build the limestone Main House patterned
after the 14th Century English/Norman feudal mansions. Working seven days
a week, ten hour days, the exterior was completed in six months. The cobblestone
courtyard features the porte cochere where carriages dropped
visitors opposite a stone cascade which has recently been renovated(1998).
The Estate, which also includes other building, provides a fairy tale
atmosphere overlooking breathtaking views. The property is now home to
a four year liberal arts college which hosts soirees, tours, reenactments,

Park and Tower
Hubbard Park was created through a gift of 125 acres to the City of Montpelier
by John E. Hubbard in 1899. Since then several other parcels have been
added to the park which now consists of 185 acres and roughly 7 miles
of hiking and skiing trails, numerous picnic areas, a soccer and baseball
field, a small pond, a sledding hill, and a 54 foot observation tower.
The observation tower offers spectacular views of the city from the highest
point in the city.

The world's largest granite quarry is located southeast of Barre. Sheer
cliffs descend 475 feet to quarry floor below. The Visitors Center describes
